What is HF | NFC RFID?

High-frequency RFID (HF RFID) refers to RFID systems that operate in the 13.56 MHz radio frequency range. This range is standardized by the following ISO/IEC standards: 15693, 14443, and 18092. Within this range, NFC (Near Field Communication) is a special subset designed for communication over very short distances (typically less than 10 centimeters) and is widely used in smartphones and smart devices. Both HF RFID and NFC utilize magnetic coupling to enable secure and fast data transmission, making them ideal for applications where close-range reading is essential, such as payment systems, access control, library management, and product authentication.

How does HF | NFC RFID work? - Technical Overview

The HF | NFC RFID system consists of three main components:

  • HF | NFC - RFID Tags (Transponders): Passive tags are equipped with a chip and a coil antenna that respond when activated by the magnetic field of a reader.
  • HF | NFC - RFID Readers: RFID readers generate an electromagnetic field to power the tag and establish communication. These include stationary readers, reader modules, and handheld transmitters.
  • HF | NFC - RFID Antennas: The antennas are connected to the readers to optimize signal transmission and reception and enable data capture.

The data transmission rates of high-frequency RFID (HF RFID) systems are relatively high, enabling fast and secure reading and writing of information. Typical reading ranges are between a few centimeters and approximately 50 centimeters, depending on the type of tag and the reader configuration. NFC is based on the same principle but is optimized for extremely short distances, making it particularly secure for sensitive data transactions such as mobile payments and digital identification.

Slower Bulk Reading: HF | NFC - RFID systems are not optimized for reading a large number of tags simultaneously and are therefore less suitable for fast-paced logistics environments.

Higher Tag Costs (for certain NFC chips): Advanced HF | NFC - RFID chips with additional security features can be more expensive than simple RFID tags.
