RFID handheld readers for UHF | RAIN are portable devices for bulk reading at 860–960 MHz (EPC Gen2 / ISO 18000-63): they capture many transponders at once and without line of sight, over several metres depending on form factor and tag. What defines a UHF handheld reader?

A UHF RFID handheld combines reader module, antenna, battery and controls in one mobile device. While an HF/NFC handheld reads cards and tags at close range of a few centimetres, usually one at a time, a UHF handheld scanner captures entire pallets, shelves or toolboxes in a single pass. Rugged, drop-resistant housings with IP protection, replaceable batteries for all-day use and integrated or optional 1D/2D barcode scanners make these devices the standard tool for mobile data capture in warehouses, production, retail and service. The read range depends on output power, antenna and transponder: smartphone-sized mobile computers read up to 1.5 to 4 m depending on the model, pistol-grip terminals such as the Chainway MC51 G up to 15 m, and individual sled readers with 1 W output power up to 30 m according to the manufacturer (depending on the tag).

The classic RFID gun: an Android terminal with grip, trigger and a powerful antenna for long range and long shifts. The Chainway MC51 G runs Android 14, reads up to 15 m and is rated IP67; the Zebra TC22R reaches up to 12.2 m with up to 33 dBm output power. The TSC Bluebird RFR900 is a pistol-grip reader that turns compatible mobile computers into a handheld and is built for throughput: more than 900 tags per second, a read range of up to 6 m and an integrated pistol grip that reduces fatigue.

Sled: UHF reader that clips onto your smartphone

A sled reader turns a smartphone or mobile computer into a fully featured UHF handheld: the sled serves as a holder for the phone and provides reader and battery, while the app runs on the phone. The Chainway R6 pairs with Android and iOS smartphones, offers up to 30 dBm (1 W) output power, a replaceable 5,200 mAh battery and an optional 2D barcode scanner. The Chainway R7 relies on the Impinj E710 engine with up to 30 dBm and a removable 5,200 mAh battery. The Chainway C66 Sled extends the C66 mobile computer with an Impinj E-series engine, 1 W output power and a read range of up to 30 m (manufacturer figure with MR6 tag). The CAEN fIDo is compatible with Windows, Android and iOS, which makes it suitable for iPhone and iPad as well: SP-Connect mount, wireless smartphone charging, an optional barcode scanner and an HID mode that passes transponder data to existing applications as keyboard input.

Compact Bluetooth readers and wearables

Without a pistol grip or sled, a compact UHF reader does the capturing: worn on the wrist or belt or mounted directly on the smartphone, connected via Bluetooth. The Chainway R5 reads up to 14 m, can be worn on the wrist or arm and has a replaceable 2,000 mAh battery. The CAEN skID with its integrated circularly polarised antenna is iPhone and iPad compatible, mounts on the smartphone magnetically or via SP-Connect and supports keyboard emulation through the HID profile. The Zebra WS50 is a standalone Android wearable with a UHF reader (up to 1.5 m) rated IP65 that works without a separate host device.

Mobile computers with an integrated UHF reader

Where RFID is just one function alongside barcode, camera and ERP app, smartphone-sized mobile computers are the natural choice. The Chainway MC80 UHF integrates the UHF reader at chip level, runs Android 16 (upgradeable to Android 20) and weighs 283 g at 15.5 mm thickness; a pistol grip is available as an accessory. The Chainway MC51 (Android 14, up to 4 m, IP67) and the Chainway C66 UHF (Android 13, up to 2 m, IP65) cover the mid-range, while the Zebra EM45 (Android 14, up to 1.5 m, IP65) brings enterprise-class features in a smartphone-like form factor. The Zebra TC701 and Zebra TC501 combine UHF, NFC and a 1D/2D barcode scanner with a hot-swappable battery in IP65/IP67 housings; the iData T2X stays particularly light at around 315 g and comes with a removable 4,500 mAh battery. The Juniper Archer 4 (Android 14, IP68, MIL-STD-810H) is configured with RFID options on request.

RFID tablets for vehicles, workshops and field service

Where a large display is needed, for example on a forklift or in a service vehicle, an industrial tablet with a UHF reader takes over. The Chainway P80 runs Android 13, reads up to 10 m and is rated IP65; the iData P1 combines UHF, NFC and a 1D/2D barcode scanner with a removable 10,000 mAh battery; the Juniper Mesa Pro runs Windows 11, is rated IP68 and is equipped with RFID options on request.

UHF or HF/NFC: which handheld suits your application?

UHF | RAIN is the choice for bulk reading and range: stocktaking, goods receiving, pallets, containers, textiles and tools. HF/NFC at 13.56 MHz reads cards, key fobs and NFC tags at close range of a few centimetres, usually one at a time, and suits access control, ticketing, maintenance records and product authentication. Devices such as the Zebra TC501, the Zebra TC701 or the iData P1 offer both frequencies. Android, Windows or peripheral: the operating model

Standalone Android terminals run the capture app directly on the device and integrate into your IT like any smartphone via Wi-Fi, 5G and mobile device management. Windows tablets such as the Juniper Mesa Pro fit when existing Windows software has to keep running. Peripheral readers (sleds or Bluetooth readers) use the smartphone or tablet you already have as the host; the CAEN readers also work with iPhone and iPad. For integration, the manufacturers usually provide SDKs and demo apps; on readers with an HID mode such as the CAEN fIDo and the CAEN skID, the captured EPCs land directly in existing applications via keyboard emulation without any programming.

How to choose the right UHF handheld

Range and output power: shelf counts get by with a few metres, pallet and hall capture benefits from 10 m and more. What matters is output power (up to 30 dBm on sled readers), the antenna and the tag in use.
Form factor and ergonomics: pistol grip for long scanning shifts, sled if smartphones are already deployed, wearable or Bluetooth reader for free hands, tablet for vehicles and workshops.
Additional capture: 1D/2D barcode scanner, NFC and camera if barcode processes continue in parallel.
Battery and shift: capacity, replaceability (hot swap) and charging accessories decide all-day use.
Protection and ruggedness: IP65 to IP68 and drop resistance for warehouses, outdoor use and cold storage.
Connectivity and operating system: 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS; Android version with an upgrade path, Windows, or connection to iOS.
