HF | NFC - RFID Stationary Reader

Stationary HF | NFC RFID readers are permanently installed devices for contactless identification at 13.56 MHz. They support ISO 14443 A/B, ISO 15693 and the NFC Forum specifications and are used wherever cards, tokens, smartphones or wearables need to be captured reliably and quickly – at access points, self-service kiosks, POS terminals, in libraries, healthcare or industrial process automation.
What defines a stationary HF | NFC reader?
Unlike mobile handheld readers, stationary HF/NFC devices are permanently mounted and run continuously. They capture transponders at short to medium range and communicate with the host IT via industrial interfaces – typically USB, Ethernet (optionally with PoE), RS-232/485, CANbus, MODBUS or digital I/Os for triggers and relays. Rugged housings with protection ratings up to IP67 enable use in harsh industrial environments, outdoors and in hygiene-sensitive areas such as hospitals or food production.
Typical applications
- Access control & single sign-on (SSO) – secure authentication with employee badges, FIDO2 tokens or mobile credentials in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet
- Self-service kiosk & ticketing – contactless handling in libraries, hotels, public transport and government
- Healthcare – patient identification, medication authentication and access to electronic health records
- Membership management & loyalty – club, fitness, library and customer card systems
- Industrial automation – tool identification, container tracking and machine release
- Point of sale & payment – contactless card readers for payment systems
Supported standards & card technologies
Depending on the model, stationary HF/NFC readers support:
- ISO/IEC 14443 Type A & B – MIFARE Classic, MIFARE Plus, MIFARE DESFire EV1/EV2/EV3, MIFARE Ultralight, NTAG
- ISO/IEC 15693 – NXP ICODE SLIX/SLIX2 with longer read range
- ISO/IEC 18092 (NFC) – peer-to-peer, tag and card emulation
- Manufacturer security credentials – HID iCLASS, HID Seos, LEGIC, FeliCa
- FIDO2 / WebAuthn – passwordless authentication
- Mobile wallets – Apple VAS, Google Smart Tap, BLE
How to choose the right stationary reader
The right choice depends on four factors: the interface to the host IT (USB for desktop PCs, Ethernet/PoE for networked installations, RS-485 for industrial bus systems), the form factor (desktop, panel-mount, surface-mount or OEM module), the protection rating (IP54 for office, IP65/IP67 for industry, outdoor or hygiene) and the security requirements (plain UID reading, SAM slot for secure authentication, or secure element for FIDO2).
