The AB Circle CIR615A is a 13.56 MHz contactless desktop reader with built-in keyboard emulation. As a USB human interface device (HID), it reads the unique identifier (UID), card serial number (CSN) or FeliCa manufacture ID (IDm) of a card or tag and types it at the cursor of the active application, such as Word, Excel, a web form or an e-mail, without any driver installation. The default configuration can be changed via software. Note that ISO/IEC 14443-4 Type B cards do not return a constant UID.

Besides keyboard emulation, the CIR615A complies with CCID and conforms to PC/SC, so the same reader also serves APDU-based smart card applications, including extended APDUs. It supports ISO/IEC 14443-4 Type A and B, ISO/IEC 15693-3 and ISO/IEC 18092 NFC, covering MIFARE® Classic, Plus, Ultralight, Ultralight C, DESFire, DESFire EV1 and EV2, FeliCa (Standard, Lite, Plug), Calypso, J-LIS cards and NFC Forum Type 1 to 5 tags, at up to 848 kbps and a reading distance of up to 50 mm, depending on the tag type. An ISO/IEC 7816 SAM slot (ID-000, Class A) is on board in the standard version.

The reader is powered via USB 2.0 Full Speed (12 Mbps) and a 1 m cable, draws less than 250 mA in operation and supports Windows® 7 SP1 and above, Linux®, macOS® 10.12 and above and Android™ 6.0 and above; the firmware can be upgraded via USB. A removable transparent card holder is included; with it the reader measures 101.6 x 72.1 x 12.9 mm, without it 100 x 68 x 11 mm, at 89 g. Typical applications are badge enrollment, time and attendance, visitor and member check-in, library and asset checkout, and customer identification at the point of sale. The reader operates from −10 to 70 °C, MTBF is 600,000 hours, and its certifications include EN 62368, BS EN 62368, CE, FCC, UKCA, VCCI, MIC, RoHS3 and REACH. Four versions are available: CIR615A-01 with USB-A and SAM slot (standard), CIR615A-02 with USB-A without SAM slot, and CIR615A-03 and -04 with USB-C, with or without SAM slot; all versions except -01 are subject to a minimum order quantity.
