An NFC reader generates a 13.56 MHz field that powers passive transponders and exchanges data with them. Proximity cards according to ISO 14443 A/B are read at close range, ISO 15693 vicinity tags at a somewhat larger distance, and ISO 18092 covers communication with smartphones. NFC Forum certified readers support three operating modes: reader/writer mode for cards and tags, card emulation, and keyboard emulation (HID), which passes read data directly to any application as keystrokes. Which mode matters depends on the task: identification, payment-style interaction or simple data entry without middleware.

How does an NFC reader work?

NFC readers are the access point between contactless credentials and your IT: they power cards, tags and smartphone wallets at 13.56 MHz, authenticate them and hand the data to your application. The technology behind them is standardized, which is why an NFC reader from one vendor reads cards from another - as long as chip technology and security features match. Standards and operating modes

Three ISO standards cover almost everything an NFC reader does in practice. ISO 14443 Type A and B is the proximity standard behind MIFARE, DESFire and most company badges, read at close range. ISO 15693 addresses vicinity tags such as ICODE, with a larger read distance. ISO 18092 defines communication with smartphones. NFC Forum certified readers additionally support three operating modes: reader/writer for classic identification, card emulation, and keyboard emulation, which types read data straight into any application without middleware. The four NFC reader form factors

Desktop readers

USB readers for the workplace are the workhorse of NFC: CCID and PC/SC compliant, plug and play, used for card issuing, single sign-on, ticketing and kiosk counters. Bluetooth readers

Mobile NFC readers pair with smartphones and tablets. The ACS ACR1555U combines Bluetooth 5.2 with AES-128 encryption, a SAM slot and a 450 mAh battery - built for mobile access control at events, field service and inspection rounds. Embedded reader modules

OEM modules disappear inside kiosks, medical devices, POS systems and smart displays. Wall and panel readers

Fixed readers sit at doors, terminals and machines. Panel readers such as the Kronotech PH22 fit the 22 mm mounting concept of industrial switch panels, with an IP67 rated front side and USB or RS-232 connectivity for machine access control in Industry 4.0 environments.

Security: from UID reading to FIDO2

Simple applications read the card UID. Serious access and identity projects authenticate: DESFire with AES, readers with SAM slots for protected key storage, and FIDO2 capable devices such as the HID OMNIKEY 5023 for passwordless enterprise login. Wallet applications require Apple VAS and Google Smart Tap certification on the reader side. Decide the security level before selecting hardware - retrofitting is expensive.

How to choose the right NFC reader

Four questions settle the choice. First, the interface: USB CCID for middleware-based software, keyboard emulation for direct input, Bluetooth for mobile use, RS-232 for controllers. Second, the form factor: desktop, mobile, embedded or fixed installation. Third, the credential technology your cards and wallets actually use. Which NFC reader types are available?

NFC Desktop Reader

The classic form factor at the workplace: connected via USB, CCID and PC/SC compliant, plug and play on common operating systems. Which cards and chips can an NFC reader read?

Depending on the model: MIFARE Classic and MIFARE DESFire (ISO 14443 A), ISO 14443 B cards, NTAG and other NFC Forum tags, ICODE transponders according to ISO 15693 and FeliCa. For secure company badges, DESFire with AES authentication is the usual choice - check the chip technology of your existing cards before selecting a reader.
Which interface should I choose: CCID, keyboard wedge or Bluetooth?

USB with CCID/PC-SC is the standard when your software talks to smart cards through middleware. Keyboard emulation (HID) types the card ID directly into any input field without extra software. Bluetooth is the choice for mobile scenarios, RS-232 for industrial controllers. The right interface follows your software landscape, not the other way round.
Can NFC readers read smartphone wallet passes?

When is a desktop reader the right choice, and when a mobile one?

Fixed workstations, counters and kiosks call for a desktop reader or an integrated module. Events, field service and inspections call for a Bluetooth reader.
