NFC readers are the access point between contactless credentials and your IT: they power cards, tags and smartphone wallets at 13.56 MHz, authenticate them and hand the data to your application. The technology behind them is standardized, which is why an NFC reader from one vendor reads cards from another - as long as chip technology and security features match. Standards and operating modes
Three ISO standards cover almost everything an NFC reader does in practice. ISO 14443 Type A and B is the proximity standard behind MIFARE, DESFire and most company badges, read at close range. ISO 15693 addresses vicinity tags such as ICODE, with a larger read distance. ISO 18092 defines communication with smartphones. NFC Forum certified readers additionally support three operating modes: reader/writer for classic identification, card emulation, and keyboard emulation, which types read data straight into any application without middleware. The four NFC reader form factors
Desktop readers
USB readers for the workplace are the workhorse of NFC: CCID and PC/SC compliant, plug and play, used for card issuing, single sign-on, ticketing and kiosk counters. Bluetooth readers
Mobile NFC readers pair with smartphones and tablets. Wall and panel readers

Security: from UID reading to FIDO2
Simple applications read the card UID. Wallet applications require Apple VAS and Google Smart Tap certification on the reader side. Decide the security level before selecting hardware - retrofitting is expensive.
How to choose the right NFC reader
Four questions settle the choice. First, the interface: USB CCID for middleware-based software, keyboard emulation for direct input, Bluetooth for mobile use, RS-232 for controllers. Second, the form factor: desktop, mobile, embedded or fixed installation. Third, the credential technology your cards and wallets actually use.
