Stationary UHF | RAIN RFID readers are permanently installed devices for contactless identification at 860–960 MHz under EPC Gen2 / ISO 18000-63. They capture passive transponders over several metres, read hundreds of tags per second and enable continuous, automated data capture in logistics, manufacturing, retail and healthcare. What defines a stationary UHF reader?
Unlike HF/NFC readers, UHF readers work at long range: typical read ranges up to 15 m, bulk capture via anti-collision and read rates of more than 1,000 tags per second on current devices such as the Impinj R700 and Chainway UR1A. Multiple antenna ports let you build defined read zones at gates, conveyors or production lines. Industrial interfaces such as Ethernet (optional PoE), RS-232/485, USB, CANbus, MODBUS, Profinet plus GPIO/relay and open protocols (LLRP, MQTT, REST) enable integration into ERP, WMS and IoT platforms. Rugged housings reach protection ratings up to IP67 depending on the model.

UHF RFID readers by form factor
RAIN RFID reader and UHF RFID reader are two names for the same device: RAIN RFID is the brand name for UHF RFID under EPC Gen2 / ISO 18000-63. The fixed readers on this page fall into four groups.
- Readers with antenna ports for dock doors, conveyors and read zones: Impinj R700 / R720 with a read rate of up to 1,100 tags per second, powered via PoE or PoE+; Zebra FX9600 with up to 8 antenna ports; CAEN Proton with 4 antenna ports and IP65; Chainway UR4 with 4 SMA antenna ports; Chainway UR8 for up to 8 external UHF antennas.
- Readers with an integrated antenna for a single read point: Chainway UR1A with adjustable RF power up to 30 dBm and PoE or PoE+; CT URIIA in an IP67 enclosure with a read range of up to 5 m.
- Gate and overhead readers: CT GateSense with a read range of up to 6 m, RGB LED light strip and EAS alarm; Zebra ATR7000 as an overhead reader with real-time location (RTLS). Design, components and form factors of a gate are covered in our guide to the RFID gate.

Key specifications of fixed RAIN RFID readers
Whether a RAIN RFID reader fits the read point comes down to transmit power, antenna ports, power supply and ingress protection.
- Transmit power: in Europe, UHF RFID readers operate at 865 to 868 MHz with a maximum of 2 W ERP under ETSI EN 302 208. Depending on the model, the fixed readers in the portfolio deliver up to 26 dBm (CT URIIA), up to 30 dBm (Chainway UR4), up to 31.5 dBm (CAEN Proton) or up to 33 dBm (CT GateSense).
- Antenna ports: an integrated antenna for a single read point, 4 ports for a dock door, up to 8 ports for several zones on one RAIN RFID reader. Readers with antenna ports also need external UHF antennas, cables and mounts; choosing them by polarisation, antenna gain and read zone is part of our project advice.
- Power and interfaces: Ethernet with PoE or PoE+ does away with a separate power supply at the dock door; some models add RS-232, USB and GPIO.
- Ingress protection: from IP50 for protected indoor areas to IP67 for harsh environments.
How to choose the right stationary UHF reader
The key factors are the number of antenna ports and the required read range, the interface to your host IT (Ethernet/PoE, serial/bus systems, LLRP/MQTT/REST), the protection rating for your environment and the form factor (integrated or external antennas).
